tomcat jakarta not logging to catalina.out

Newbie with tomcat , after reviewing catalina.out
notice that only the startup message was logged.

After that not a single line from the java app was logged

also a warning from log4j was present during startup/shutdown
log4j:WARN No appenders could be found for logger (org.apache.commons.digester.Digest er). log4j:WARN Please initialize the log4j system properly.
Solution was to add a standard conf file for jog4j
under $CATALINA_HOME/common/classes/log4j.properties

that made the apps logging start again.
